In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake sent tremors through the sparsely populated and remote area of Loving County in West Texas. Located on the border with New Mexico, this seismic event was centered about 23 miles southwest of the unincorporated town of Mentone.
While a 5.3 magnitude earthquake is considered moderate and has the potential to damage buildings, no reports of damage or injuries were received. Loving County, known for its low population, boasted an estimated population of just 51 residents in 2022, with Mentone having about 10 inhabitants.
Remarkably, the earthquake’s impact was felt as far away as Ferris, Texas, nearly 437 miles to the east in the Dallas area. This event was followed by three other quakes, with the strongest recorded at a 3.4 magnitude. Interestingly, this seismic activity follows a similar 5.3 magnitude earthquake recorded in the same area nearly a year ago. The geological dynamics of this remote region continue to be a subject of interest and study for researchers and seismologists.
